I never see bad acting anymore.
I suppose I could find some if I really went looking for it. But I certainly don’t see it at the established theater companies on my beat. From Kansas City Repertory Theatre to the Unicorn to the Coterie, local stages this year were filled with good — occasionally great — performances.
Sometimes the work was by an out-of-towner. Sometimes it came from longtime veterans of the local scene. From Shakespeare to French farce, audiences had scores of opportunities to watch actors at the top of their game.
But it was also a year that offered an unprecedented range of material. We saw worthy classics revived, obscure plays rediscovered and new work seeking a precarious balance on the cutting edge.
Here, then, are my picks for some of the most memorable performances on local stages this year:
•James Wright and Jan Chapman in “Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune.” Terrence McNally’s two-actor dramedy about a one-night stand that blossoms into true love was given new life by the Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre. Wright, taking a break from Mr. Funny and Mr. Musical, demonstrated his dramatic chops and was beautifully complemented by Chapman. With director Karen Paisley they found the emotional truth underlying this gritty blue-collar love story.

•Jennifer Aguilar in “9 Parts of Desire.” Director Cynthia Levin transformed Heather Raffo’s one-woman show about Iraqi women into a three-woman piece that showcased strong actresses in multiple roles. Cheryl Weaver and Andi Meyer were very good, but Aguilar transfixed the audience as the play’s most tragic character — Layal, a painter who had made her deal with the devil to live a privileged life among the Iraqi elite.

•Jim Korinke in “Mauritius.” Korinke has plied his craft on stages in Kansas City and elsewhere for decades and occasionally lands a role that lets him show us just how good he is. Levin gave him just such a role, a philosophical thug in the Unicorn’s production of this engrossing play about rare stamps and the people who lust for them.

He was a graduate of Park Hill High School and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.
